1. Upload a background. A simple way to make your desktop look cool is to upload a background. Your computer will come with a bunch of pictures that you can use, but if you don't like any of those options, use an image from Google or from your own pictures library. Consider using pictures of:  
2. Add a fun mouse pointer. If you're bored with the standard mouse pointer, change it! Click on the "Change Mouse Pointers" button (if your computer has one) to change the image of your mouse, the speed, etc. Again, if you don't like the mouses that are already installed in your computer, download some pointers from the internet.
3. Customize the colours. Some programs (like Windows 7), will allow you to change the colour of your internet browser, taskbar, etc. If you have a program that allows you to do this, customize your colour scheme with your favourite colours or one that complements your background image.
4. Add widgets and gadgets. Right click, and then find the Gadgets section. Scroll through the available gadgets and add some to your desktop. Some options include a clock, calender, weather, puzzle, etc.
5. Move your programs around. Most people leave their programs in columns on one side of their desktop. If you think that doing that is too boring, move your programs around. Make a border with them, put them in sections, put the original programs on 1 side and the stuff you downloaded on another side, etc.
6. Add a lot of programs on your desktop. Don't think it's too nerdy/geeky. It's actually really cool, especially if the programs have a cool icon.
