How to Buy Books on Google

The section for books on Google was previously known as Google Print and Google Book Search, but the section has been renamed to Google Books. The books section allows you to purchase digitized versions of magazines, paperbacks and hardbacks as electronic books (also known as ebooks) for Android and other JavaScript enabled devices. Before you decide to buy books on Google, you can preview samples of them by clicking on the "View Sample" link associated with the book that you are interested in buying.

Steps

Creating a Google Checkout Account

  1. Sign up for a Google Checkout account so you can make purchases on Google's shopping websites. The account can be created for free and can also be used on other Google platforms such as iGoogle, Gmail, Google Groups and Picasa.

    • Go to the Google Checkout login page and click on "Sign up now."
    • Complete the registration form and submit it via the "Create my account. Time to shop!" link near the bottom of the page.
    • Look for the verification message that you should have received from Google in the inbox of the email address that you used to sign up. Use the link provided in the message to verify and activate your Google Checkout account.

Finding & Choosing Books

  1. Visit the Google search engine homepage.

  2. Access the "more" submenu from the link at the top and select "Books" from the drop-down list that appears.

  3. Enter some keywords related to the type of book that you want to buy in the search bar and press the "Search Books" button.

  4. Browse through the books that you see in the search results. You can see details and usually preview samples of different books by clicking on their name or book cover icon.

Purchasing Books

# Open the details page of the book that you want to purchase. At times Google will just refer you to other stores such as Barnes and Noble where you can buy the book, but you can buy ebooks on Google directly if you see a "Buy now" button on the details page.

  1. Press the "Buy now" button to review and purchase the book through Google Checkout. Purchases can be made using any major credit card (American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa). After completing the transaction you can start reading the complete ebook that has been downloaded on your device.

Tips

  • It may be wise to visit websites such as GoodReads to read book reviews that can help you decide which book to buy. Once you have made your selection you can return to Google Books to make your purchase. In fact, there are many free Google ebooks so making a purchase may not even be required.
  • Other portable devices that you can find ebooks for on Google include the iPhone, iPad and Nook.
  • Google Books has a return policy of 7 days for electronic books that aren't working properly. A request for refund must be submitted within 7 days after you buy books on Google (a refund form can be found online under the "Contact Us" section).
  • If you already have a Google account you can use it to create a Google Checkout account when you purchase your first book through Google eBook.
  • You can save previews for the books that you like using the "Add to My Library" link on the left hand side of the page that contains the preview. Once the preview has been added to your library it can be conveniently accessed by clicking on the "My Library" link located under the search bar on the Google Books homepage and then selecting the book from the "My Google eBooks" list.

Warnings

  • Your email service provider may detect the Google verification message as junk mail. If you don't see the message from Google in your inbox, check your spam or junk folder.
